How it works

How order merging works in Mergify

When a customer places two orders, or two customers ship to the same address, you'd normally pay to ship each one separately. Mergify combines them into a single new order so you ship once — saving the shipping cost and the handling time.

You stay in control the whole way: nothing merges without rules you set or a click you make, and any merge can be undone.

There are three ways to merge, from fully hands-on to fully automatic.

How do I merge orders manually?

Manual Merge is the hands-on option. Select the orders you want to combine — from the Mergify dashboard, or with the Add to Mergify button right on Shopify's order pages — then choose how to merge them:

Merge to Order Creates the new merged order immediately. The standard path — and it never affects your inventory.
Merge to Draft Order Creates a draft first, so you can preview the merged order before committing. Note: completing a draft order can affect inventory if you track stock in Shopify — so Merge to Order is the safer default.

You'll need to select at least two orders to merge.

What is Smart Suggest, and how does it work?

Mergify groups orders going to the same address into a one-click suggestion Suggested merge Same shipping address · 2 orders #1042 · #1043 → 14 Rue de Rivoli Merge MERGED 1 shipment

Smart Suggest finds mergeable orders for you. Based on the rules you define, Mergify groups orders that can be combined — for example, multiple orders going to the same shipping address — and shows each group as a suggestion. You review it and merge with a click.

You can group suggestions two ways: Shipping Address only, or Customer & Address together. Expand any suggestion to see the individual orders and uncheck any you want to leave out. Each suggestion is an independent merge.

Can Mergify merge orders automatically?

Yes — Auto Merge combines eligible orders for you without manual review, based on your rules. When it's on, orders from the same customer shipping to the same address are merged automatically. You choose the timing:

Instant Orders merge as soon as they qualify.
Delay Merge after a set number of minutes — catches a quick second order.
Daily Merge once a day at a time you set.
Weekly Merge on a chosen day and time each week.

Before turning Auto Merge on, set your Merge Settings and Filtering Rules first, so only the orders you intend get merged.

How do I control which orders get merged?

Two layers give you control.

Filtering Rules

Decide which orders qualify for Smart Suggest and Auto Merge. Filter by order creation date, tags, customer tags, financial status, fulfillment status, shipping address, and shipping carrier — and combine conditions to be as precise as you need.

Orders that don't match are left alone.

Merge Settings

Decide how the merged order is built and what happens to the originals — line items, shipping line, notes, tags, customer details, and more.

Set them once; they apply to every merge.

What happens to my original orders?

You decide, in Merge Settings. Mergify can:

Archive the originals so they're out of your fulfillment queue.
Fulfill them automatically — right after merging or when you fulfill the merged order (tracking carries across).
Tag or add notes to them for your records.
Leave them exactly as they are.

The originals are never deleted by merging. Canceling originals is available but irreversible — Mergify warns you before you choose it.

Built to be safe

Is order merging safe?

Mergify is built to be reversible and predictable.

Undo any merge Undo deletes the merged order; your original orders were never removed, so they remain in your store.
Preview first Use Merge to Draft before anything is final.
Inventory is never touched No double-counting, no adjustments by merging.
Analytics stay clean Merged orders are created in test mode by default, which Shopify excludes from sales reporting.
Your money stays put Mergify never charges customers or moves transactions; refunds and payments are handled on the original orders.
